Women's Tennis Canada Cup 2009!
The Russians Are Coming! The Russians Are Coming!
The Women's Tennis Canada Cup 2009! was held August 15 to 23, 2009 at the Rexall Centre on the campus of York University which is located at the north end of Toronto.
Since 1892, the best women's tennis players in the world have showcased their skills on Canadian courts. Only Wimbledon and the U.S. Open have longer histories than the major Canadian stop, which is acknowledged by the tennis world to be one of the best-run tournaments on the Tour. Classified as a Premier event under the new Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Roadmap, the Rogers Cup offers US $2 million in prize money and attracts the brightest stars of women's tennis year after year. This tournament attracted the women's ten of the ten top players attended but seven were quickly eliminated. Venus Williams lost in her first match and Serena Williams appeared to give up after losing her first set in a tie breaker in the semi-finals. She lost service while serving for the match.
TorontoArtsandEvents ponders whether or not Serena Williams would have lost the match if it was the U.S. Open? By Saturday evening The Russians were in control and someone cheered "Russia!" during the match between Elena DEMENTIEVA & Maria Sharapova. TorontoArtsandEvents! was struck by the beauty of the two finalists who have model like appearances! Elena DEMENTIEVA defeated a tired Maria Sharapova 6-4 6-3.
The doubles draw attracted many of the world1s top doubles teams except for the Williams sisters.
LLAGOSTERA VIVES, Nuria (ESP)/MARTINEZ SANCHEZ, Maria Jose (ESP) defeated STOSUR, Samantha (AUS)/STUBBS, Rennae (AUS) in a tie breaker 26 75 11-9 Fans we spoke to were disappointed that there was no third set. We suggest they
change the format to a third set!!
