On May 3rd, 2007, The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery at Harbourfront Centre marked their
20th anniversary with a sold out celebration. Viva La Revolution was the spirited title for Power Ball 9,
an event informed by various revolutions - sexual, industrial, political, cyber or any design associated with
contemporary art. As proven in the past 8 years, this fund-raiser is known for what it is not predictable!
You never know who will be there or exactly what may happen. One thing is for certain, it will be
provocative, it will have edge and never be a traditional black tie fund-raiser.
"Revolution was the perfect theme to capture what the Power Ball and The Power Plant
contribute to the art community," said Clair Christie, Co-Chair of Power Ball 9. "Toronto's cultural
scene is constantly evolving and this institution plays a leading role in that evolution. At The Power
Ball, we celebrate those who support the arts by throwing a smashing party that takes the city by storm."
This evening of rebellion had it all from showcasing contemporary art to engaging guests with several
interactive installations including Netwerk Touch ; also a very popular virtual kissing booth, and VIRG, a
by - request virtual video jukebox. Other highlights of Revolution were several projection pieces
with an audio score created by PSBEUYS. Later on, New York City underground sensation Earl Greyhound
rocked the stage and fueled the revolution into the early morning hours. Volunteer servers offering up
lamb sandwiches, fish and chips as well as other tasty treats were well received. Popular party rooms were those
featuring exclusive drink sponsors Skyy Vodka or Grolsch Premium Lager.
Loyal sponsors are crucial to the success of a fundraising event like this and Holt Renfrew continued
their support for a 3rd year as key sponsor who presented an interactive cake sculpture 8 feet wide and 14 feet tall.
Hugo Boss for Power Ball 9, re-created the Beatles album 'Revolution' - complete with styled mannequins
at microphones playing instruments atop a rotating record. Believe me, you had to be there. If you were not, then
there is always next year.
Since 1987, The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery at Harbourfront Centre has grown as a strong
independent Canadian voice in the international contemporary art arena. As a registered Canadian
organization, The Power Plant is a reliable source of visual pleasure and a destination for culturally
astute Torontonians. A Happy 20th Birthday to the Power Plant. For more visit www.thepowerplant.org by clicking on this page.
