The 125th WTA Women’s Tennis Canada Cup 2017 was held August 5 to 13, 2017 at the Aviva Centre on the campus of York University which is located at the north end of Toronto.
Since 1892, the best tennis players in the world have showcased their skills on Canadian courts. Only Wimbledon and the U.S. Open have longer histories than the major Canadian stop, which is acknowledged by the tennis world to be one of the best run tournaments on the Tour. Classified as a Premier event under the WTA Tour Roadmap, this event offers $2 U.S. million in prize money and attracts the brightest stars of tennis year after year. [tenniscanada.com]

She won the last two sets 6-4 6-3 – she had to play the semi-finals later that day.

Svitolina defeated the 2nd see Halep in just 57 minutes 6-1 6-1 in a match in which Halep appeared exhausted although Svitolina was also tired.

In the third round, she easily beat Venus Williams 6-2 6-1.  Williams had a good season as a finalist at the Australian Open and Wimbledon.

Elina Svitolina defeated Caroline Wozniacki in straight sets 6-4, 6-0 for the 2017 ATP title.  Svitolina (5th seed) defeated her 6th seeded Danish opponent in 77-minutes to take her first title at Toronto’s Aviva Centre on Sunday.  Although Wozniacki has six WTA finals this season - she not been named champion.  The first set was an even battle until the 4-4 tie and then Svitlina took control and won the set 6-4.  Wozniacki then faded and was dominated in the second set 6-0.

Women’s Doubles

The No.  1 seed and defending champions Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina defeated No.8 seeded German Anna-Lena Gröenefeld and Czech partner Kv?ta Peschke 6-0, 6-4 in the final match on Sunday.

On the prior night in the semi-final Zverev defeated Canadian Shapovalov in two sets 6-4 and 7-5.  Shapovalov’s run was exceptional - he defeated Nadal (3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (4)) and is the youngest player in history to reach the semi-finals of a Masters 1000 event and place for the main draw of the US Open – he will not have to qualify.  Check back here when the men ATP returns to Toronto.  How will Shapovalov do in the U.S. Open?  Will Elina Svitolina continue her run?
