The Seventh Annual Toronto Chocolate Festival is officially underway. Produced by JCO Communications Inc., the Toronto Chocolate Festival exclusively features and celebrates all things chocolate. Throughout November, there will be a series of chocolate themed events, such as Chocolympics, The Christmas Chocolate and Pastry Fair, and Chocolate Afternoon Tea. Toronto Arts and Events had the pleasure to attend the Toronto Luxury Chocolate Show, a two-day show where chocolate aficionados and chocoholics can sample and buy products and creations from various exhibitors all over the world, experience new tastes, and learn more about chocolate. The show took place during the first weekend of the month, Saturday, Nov.4th-Sunday, November 5th, 2017 at the Bram and Bluma Appel Salons in the Toronto Reference Library. Partial funds from the show will be directed to prostate and breast cancer initiatives, the Willow Foundation and Gilda’s Club of Greater Toronto.

Upon entering the salon, the scent of hot chocolate from Caotina embraced the attendees coming in from the rain and chill of the afternoon. The Toronto Luxury Chocolate Show was a boutique-style show, making it much smaller than your average trade show. While it was easy to visit each booth and get acquainted with the chocolatiers, trying to choose which booth to visit first was initially overwhelming. Gaylea was handing out samples of the limited edition Real Dark Chocolate Caramel Whipped Cream along with coupons. Real Layers served spoonfuls of gourmet butter cream frosting in dark chocolate, vanilla, and maple flavours. The frosting was so indulgent, creamy, and fantastic on top of cookies.

The show also featured hourly wine and chocolate pairing sessions hosted by Miss Bailey Brown Chocolates. Each session included four wines and paired chocolates —the chocolates provided by Miss Bailey Brown Chocolates— all meant to entertain, educate, and expand one’s knowledge of pairing the right still wine with chocolate and chocolate desserts. These sessions are led by certified Sommelier and representative of Halpern Wine Imports, Scott Leinster. Scott was such a delight! His expertise and passion made the subject of choosing the right still wine with chocolate accessible and engaging. Out of the four wines-chocolate pairings, two stood out from the rest. the Strawberries and Cream truffle with the Lampo Prosecco Brut Borgoluce and the Classic Dark Silk chocolate truffle with the Château Grand Terrier Des Eyriaux Bordeaux Valpolicella. The prosecco’s high acidity was ideal in cutting through the creamy texture of the strawberries and cream truffle while emphasizing its fruit notes. The Classic Dark Silk with the Bordeaux was a knock-out pairing! The ripe tannins in the Bordeaux highlighted the rich supple texture of the chocolate and the truffle complimented the spice notes in the wine. Professional jazz musician, Eddie Bullen, provided musical entertainment as attendees enjoyed their wines and chocolate, setting the elegant mood for the session.

Other highlights from the show included interviews and demonstrations from the chocolate artisans and exhibitors. The founder of Miss Bailey Brown Chocolates, Natasha Romero Medrano, made two of her signature savoury truffles, Cranberry Goat Cheese and Basil, and Katherine Leddy of Goûter made two different kinds of chocolate bark. The managing partner for Chocome, Daniel Lozeman, talked about his multi-award winning chocolates and the brand’s near fanatic drive for perfection, ranging from the use of premium quality ingredients imported from Europe to the products’ uniquely upscale design with edible gold and silver flakes and crystallized flower petals. The show ended with a series of raffle draws for gift bags from PopGod!, Babancu Chocolate and Rum, and Chocostyle.
