The twenty-second annual Eat to the Beat (ETTB) fundraiser was held on Tuesday, October 17th, 2017. As Toronto’s top culinary fundraiser, ETTB featured sixty female chefs preparing over sixty one-of-a-kind dishes, all in support of those affected by cancer. Founded twenty-one years ago by sisters Lisa and Abby Slater, Eat to the Beat has raised more than $3.9 million since its inception. The funds raised from the event will allow the expansion of research, services, and support for all who are affected by breast cancer. With the recent merger of Willow Breast & Hereditary Cancer Support with the Canadian Cancer Society (CSS), the funds from the night’s event will make sure no one has to face cancer alone.

The sixty chefs took over the outer foyer of the Roy Thomson Hall. The never-ending row of food and beverage stations was certainly a feast for all five senses! Chefs that were present included Donna Dooher of Mildred’s Temple Kitchen, Wanda Beaver from Wanda’s Pie in the Sky, and Chef Véronique Perez from Crêpes à GoGo. Many of the chefs present at this year’s Eat to the Beat have been participating in the fundraiser for ten years or more.

This year’s Eat to the Beat fundraiser offered complimentary coat check (which was actually a much-welcomed addition) and a photo booth, complete with adorable props and accessories. While there wasn’t a raffle at this year’s ETTB, the silent auction was even more expansive with amazing prizes. There were so many KitchenAid stand mixers and appliances up for auction that night! The Corset Models, a longstanding tradition of ETTB, were absolutely delightful as they greeted guests in their amazing costumes, and just being their brave, charming, and sparkling selves. Shout out to the Unicorn Frappuccino, the Sugar Shack model and the Watermelon for their cheeky and awesome costumes!

With an overwhelming number food and beverage stations to choose from, guests were provided with a menu containing the names of the sixty female chefs and their accompanying dishes. The beverages for the night was generously provided by Casa Dea Estates Winery, Pravda Vodka, SoCIAL LITE Vodka, and Lifford Wine and Spirits, just to name a few. Evian, Starbucks, and La Croix provided non-alcoholic beverages and coffee to the guests.

Of course, the real star of the event was the food! Chef Elaine Wong from The OMNI King Edward Hotel prepared a royally delicious dish of torched citrus beef tataki with pickled vegetables on forbidden black rice. Mildred’s Temple Kitchen’s head chef, Donna Dooher, made an exceptional rice noodle salad with squash, red peppers, cucumber, and chili beef. The chili beef was succulent and the dressing for the rice noodles had the perfect balance of sweet, spicy, and tangy flavours. The key lime tarts with graham cracker crumble made by Wanda Beaver of Wanda’s Pie in the Sky bakery also proved to be a popular dish amongst the guests. The Rolling Pin’s Donut Wall featured a variety of mini donuts and attracted so many guests to its station for its fantastic display and taste. Other culinary favourites of the night included Elle Cuisine’s chicken and grits, Yorkshire Pudding Catering’s spiced chicken crackling with a cucumber mint slaw, and The Gladstone Hotel’s smoked sisig on beet pulp crepe, calamansi ikura, and a coconut and ginger aioli. Near the end of the night, there were a series of thank you speeches from Joanne Brophy and Cathy Park, Eat to the Beat Co-Chairs. The night concluded with live music from Bellosound.

The Eat to the Beat fundraiser was such a fun and glamourous food fest! Rest assured that everyone who attended went home with full stomaches and even fuller hearts.
