SNAP 2017

On Thursday, March 30th, 2017, the AIDS Committee of Toronto (ACT) hosted its successful annual live photographic auction. As one of the organization’s significant fundraising event for ACT, this gala event featured a silent auction, an exciting live auction, and a photo competition. Since its inception over twenty years ago, SNAP! has raised over $2.3 million for their organization as well as provided exposure to many of the world’s emerging and established photographers to showcase their artwork to many gallery owners and patrons. All of the funds raised from both the silent and live auctions will support ACT’s programs and services to better assist those living with, at risk, or affected by HIV/AIDS.

This year’s fundraiser was held at the Bram and Bluma Appel Salon inside the Toronto Reference Library. The who’s who of Toronto’s arts and entertainment scene were present at the auction, including Kelly Kyle and Sonia Scharf, owners of Akasha Art Projects, and CBC television personality Steven Sabados. During the cocktail reception, guests mingled amongst the displayed artwork whilst enjoying the delicious hors d’oeuvres from Eatertainment Events and Catering and open bar. The silent auction featured many amazing prizes, such as flight packages and tickets to a performance by the prestigious Eifman Ballet of St. Petersburg.

The live auction began with John Maxwell, Executive Director of ACT, recognizing the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nations followed by expressing gratitude to all of the sponsors, committee members, and volunteers who made the live auction another success. During the live auction, the guests had the pleasure to hear from Ower Oberto, a brave and determined human rights activist who used ACT’s services when he arrived in Canada in 2014 after being targeted by the Venezuelan government. He praised ACT and Employment ACTion for helping him improve his English language skills, find gainful employment, and establish a new life in Canada.

The live auction itself featured some striking and innovative photography, some of which sparked bidding wars. Five-time photographer/donor Maureen O’Connor submitted her chromogenic print, “Looking Back”, and was a real conversation starter due to its quirky subject matter (how did a horse get inside an abandoned warehouse?) The piece went for $4300. The fierce gelatin silver print entitled “Rupaul (with Pots and Pans) at Club MK” by John Simone sold for an impressive $900. At the end of the live auction, auctioneer Perry Tung announced that the event raised a total of $86,400. The SNAP! Fundraiser concluded with more mingling amongst the guests and photographers in attendance.
