The Pan American Games were held in Toronto from July 10 to July 26, 2015 in Toronto, Hamilton and other communities in Ontario, Canada.  The Para Pam America Games were held August 8 to August 15, 2015 in Toronto, Hamilton and other communities in Ontario, Canada.    PANAMANIA, a 35-day arts event also took place with more than 250 unique performances and exhibitions, both free and ticketed, across Toronto from July 10 to August 15.  “PANAMANIA will showcase the diverse cultures and artistic excellence of Ontario, Canada and the Americas through music, theatre, dance, visual arts and fashion.”

Pan Am opening ceremonies:

Toronto stunned the world with the Pan Am Opening Ceremonies!  It was a beautifully crafted and stunning display by the Circule du sole.  It began with a pow wow based on theme “From Dream to Reality.”  There were about 45,000 paying customers at Toronto’s Pan Am Ceremonies Venue .  Circule du sole produced a 150-minute extravaganza that married the familiar such as a parade of nations and national celebrities with the very abstract such as a homage to Canada’s wildlife that included a bear, caribou, woodpecker and owl shepherding a group of children to the stage.  The abstract portions of the ceremony were stunning -  acrobats in floating bubbles & spinning ladders, ballet dancers, gymnasts leaping over a line of fire together with a light show.  Canada’s athletic past was honoured - the five members of the gold medal-winning relay team from the Atlanta Olympics were present and represented through video. Team Canada’s two most famous sprinters; namely,  Bruny Surin and Donovan Bailey, passed the flame from Surin to Bailey on the CN Tower’s Edgewalk.  Bailey then base-jumped off the tower into the building in the pre-taped segment, torch in hand.  The national anthem was sung perfectly by pianist Chilly Gonzalez, who collaborated with Daft Punk, and vocalist Véronic DiCaire.  It was a beautifully done opening that was fit for a Canadian as well as an international crowd – now if we had only had a musician like Drake to arouse the crowd even further … and then the games began!!

Pan Am Closing ceremonies

The Pan Am Closing Ceremony was held on July 26, 2015 at the Rogers Centre.  Canada honoured outstanding Canadian Games performances and the contributions of all Games partners and handed the baton to Lima, Peru, the Host City of the 2019 Pan American Games.  Canadian singer Serena Ryder gave a strong performance as she sang the games’ official theme, Together We Are One.  Torontoartsandevents thought Pitbull’s performance was great!  Young members of the crowd rocked to Kanye West, who opened with Stronger and then turned off the lights, forgoing fanciful pyrotechnics or light shows for the rest of his set and ended the set with a mike malfunction and abruptly left the set.  Torontoartsandevents was told it helps to know his lyrics to enjoy his music!!!

A great Closing that Toronto and Canada can be proud of!

Canada House

Canada House held its home for Canadian athletes during the games at the Toronto Hilton where there were daily press conferences for the press as well as evening medal celebrations – Canada had a lot to celebrate winning 217 medals, 78 Gold, 69 Silver and 70 Bronze.  It was a great opportunity to photograph and interview Canadian athletes!

Cayman Islands House:

In a first, FUSE Marketing Group welcomed the Cayman Islands to their home away from home at its headquarters, dubbed Cayman House for the duration of the Games.  Cayman Athletes participating in the Swimming and Beach Volleyball events, together with President Donald McLean of the Cayman Island Olympic Committee kicked things off with the Grand Opening of CaymanHouse at FUSE headquarters - 379 Adelaide Street West, 3rd floor.  There was three musical acts taking the stage:  Canadian rockers The Mandevilles and the acoustic styling’s of Robbie & Matthew – an energetic Toronto duo specializing in classic covers that are sure to get everyone dancing.  Drinks and gourmet Canadian-Cayman fusion hors d’oeuvres were served throughout the evening.
The Games:

The Games cost an estimated $ 3 Billion while Canada won 217 medals, 78 Gold, 69 Silver and 70 Bronze.

Team Canada’s Women Basketball Defeats Team U.S.A.  For First-Ever Gold at Pan Am Games!

On July 20, 2015 Canada’s Women Basketball defeated the U.S.A. to capture its first ever Gold medal at the Pan Am Games in Toronto!  The Americans took an early lead 23 to 13 at the end of the 1st quarter; however, the Canadians fought back in the 2nd Quarter to tie at the half:  36 to 36.  In the 3rd Quarter, team Canada built a lead of 18 points through solid defence and good offence.  The Americans battled back and narrowed the score to 62 to 51 at the end of 3rd quarter in Canada’s favour.  The Americans attempted to complete the comeback in the final quarter as they did against the Cubans – defeating them by only by a single point - ; however, the Canadians depth and defence proved too much for the Americans and Canada won 81 to 73 to capture the Gold!!

Kia Nurse shot 33 points, Natalie Achonwa 13 and Tamara Tatham 10 points for the Canadians, whose defence stunned their offence. Team Canada with their dept and great defence defeated their first four opponents easily — Venezuela, Argentina, Cuba, Brazil.

Canada Men’s Basketball Team Defeated the U.S. in O-T but Lost to Brazil to Capture the Silver Medal:

Canada Men’s Basketball Team won a slot in the men’s basketball gold at the Pan American Games after defeating the United States 111-108 in O-T on Friday, July 24.  Canada, never having finished better than fourth at the Pan Am Games, needed a fourth-quarter comeback and overtime charge to defeat the Americans who led 97-94 with 50 seconds remaining thanks to a Bobby Brown shot. Eighteen year old Murray sank a three-pointer to tie the game and the Canadian defence stopped the U.S. in their tracks.  The game went to overtime at 97-97 with Canada prevailing in overtime   111-108.

Canada Men’s Basketball team won the silver medal after losing 86-71 to Brazil in the final.  Canada played a poor first half appearing nervous and disorganized.  They played a good second half but could not overcome the nineteen point Brazilian lead.  Brazil had defeated the Dominican Republic 68-62 in the earlier semifinal. Both finalists were 4-0.

Women’s Beach Volleyball

Canadians, Taylor Pischke and Melissa Humana-Paredes had a following at the Pan Am Games winning their first three rounds and winning their quarter-final all in straight sets.  In their desire to win Canada’s first women’s beach volleyball medal at a Pan Am Games , Humana-Paredes stated that they had played too “tentative,” resulting in a straight set loss to 5th ranked Brazil’s Carolina Horta and Liliane Maestrini.
