CANADIAN MUSIC WEEK - KEYNOTE WITH SPIKE LEE – Saturday May 9, 2015

As one of America’s most vocal and innovative independent successful filmmakers, over his four-decade long career,  Spike Lee has made over fifty films.  He has created his own production company, 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks. Expounding upon Spike Lee’s expansive and storied career, the Keynote Interview give attendees a look into the filmmaker’s accomplishments, creative processes as well as interesting stories such as the making of Michael Jackson’s videos and how he got into making commercials and his teaching career.

Export Market Component:

As part of this year’s export market component, CMW presented a Spotlight on Australia and New Zealand.  Representatives from these countries travelled to Toronto, Ontario to take part in market overviews, presentations, business meetings and international receptions, some which of TorontoArtsandevents attended.

The International Marketplace:

The International Marketplace played home to Argentina, Australia, Austria, Barbados, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Ghana, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, India, Ireland, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Nigeria, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Scotland, Singapore, Slovakia, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, The Netherlands, United Kingdom, and the USA and hosted more than 1,000 one-on-one dedicated matchmaking meetings for Canadians with members of the delegations from Australia, New Zealand and North Korea.

Spotlight on Australia:

Australia, with a population of just 22 million, is a natural trading partner for Canada’s music industry and offers plenty of opportunities to Canadian artists and music businesses looking to expand their international reach.  With its music market ranked sixth in the world by IFPI, and Australia’s live music industry contributes $1.1 billion to the Australian economy.

Australia boasts engaged and enthusiastic fans that love listening to and seeing music live. Although local artists like Sia, Iggy Azalea, Tame Impala, Flume and Kimbra have had huge global success recently, Australian audiences also love international music, and as Northern Hemisphere artists dominate the charts in both countries, there is a great opportunity for Canadian artist to expand there and vica versa.

Korean Showcase:  “K-POP NIGHT OUT”.

The Korean Creative Content Agency (KOCCA) showcased four Korean acts at their official showcase at Toronto’s Revival Bar, beginning at 6pm with an exclusive VIP reception and music at 7pm.

With many artists making their major debut in Canada, the artists are an eclectic mix of sixties pop, hip-hop, and funk. Performing artists were Sultan of the Disco, a quirky electronic soul funk quintet, K-Pop super group LUNAFLY, smooth and soulful rapper Verbal Jint, and hip-hop collective and independent label Illionaire Records.

TorontoArtsandevents!  was able to cover these bands and clearly, the international and Canadian crowd rocked to these bands:

SULTAN OF THE DISCO

“Sultan of The Disco? is an electronic soul/funk quintet from Korea and includes band members Nahzam Sue (lead vocals), J.J Hassan (dance), Ganji Kim (drums), G (bass) and Hong-ki (guitar). The group, signed to Boonga Boonga Records, have released 4 EPs and one studio album, building a devoted and rabid fan base across Korea and Europe. Sultan of the Disco made waves at Glastonbury Festival in 2014 and have received praise as one of the most unique performances at Korea’s Music Matters Festival. Donning quirky matching outfits and getting crowds moving with their funky disco sounds, Sultan of The Disco are the ultimate crowd pleasers.”[press release]
LUNAFLY

“After mesmerizing the Asian music scene with their award-winning electronic dance act Brown Eyed Girls, K-Pop chart wizards, Nega Networks, once again spin their music magic by launching their first, post-idol boyband, LUNAFLY. A multi-talented, multi-national, multi-lingual live band, LUNAFLY defies the typical K-POP boy-band stereotype by writing their own music, playing their own instruments, and singing their own songs. With British-Korean composer Sam Carter, acoustic guitarist Yun, and piano/bass/percussionist Teo all sharing the vocalist spotlight, LUNAFLY is a fresh, singer-songwriting trio that has curious K-Pop fans around the world abuzz with anticipation.”

Verbal Jint

“Kim Jin-tae, better known by his stage name Verbal Jint, is one of South Korea’s most influential rappers, lyricists, and record producers. Under Brand New Music, he officially debuted in 2001 with the mini-album “Modern Rhymes” and has since released record-breaking singles like “I Must Be Stupid”, “If It Ain’t Love”, and “You Look Good”. Verbal Jint is notable for his groundbreaking innovations in Korean hip hop rap and rhyme-work.  A cross-over sensation, his music has touched fans from the underground hip hop scene all the way to the mainstream charts in a market heavily populated with K-pop.”
Illionaire Records

“Illionaire Records is an independent South Korean record label founded in January of 2011 by rappers The Quiett and Dok2. Illionaire Records is one of Korea’s most influential indie hip-hop record labels in South Korea. In 2014 the label’s artists headlined the “Asian Music Festival Summer Concert” in New York City. That summer the label also released a compilation album entitled “11:11.” Their roster includes The Quiettt, Beenzino, and Dok2 (AKA Gonzo) who take the stage together for powerful and exciting performances.”

Canadian Music Festival:

The Canadian Music Festival had more than 1000 artists in six days of the festival. Showcases from artists, labels, agencies, media outlets and corporate sponsors filled 60 venues throughout Toronto.

Keynote

David Israelite, President & CEO of the National Music Publishers Association, presented a powerful case as to why songwriters should get more royalties while giant internet companies are losing money while expanding.

Is the Value of Music Shared Fairly?

In an interesting panel discussion,  music industry professionals presented their arguments why or why not songwriters should get more revenue.  Songwriters argued that digital platforms like Pandora
are not compensating them fairly and are only currently losing money due to expansion.  The digital platforms are arguing that they are losing money and that an increase in royalties to the songwriters would be harmful to the industry.  There was a comment that the digital platforms are evaluated at billions; however, the songwriters are getting pennies.  Taylor Swift in 2014 withdrew her performances from Pandora in protest in what she was paid.  However, due to compulsory licensing, songwriters could not withdraw their songs.  With streaming becoming the dominant was to consume music, a coalition of songwriters has even launched a new initiative, the Fair Trade Music movement, and are asking for music revenues to be more evenly shared between the different stakeholders.
