On the evening of November 19, 2012, SOCAN (The Society of Composers Authors and Music Publishers of Canada) and the Canadian music industry’s elite gathered at the Roy Thomson Hall in the heart of downtown Toronto to recognize the achievements of the country’s best songwriters, composers, lyricists and music publishers at the 23rd annual SOCAN Awards.  It was hosted by Seamus O’Regan.
There were live performances from The Trews, Lynn Miles, Wendell Ferguson, The Good Brothers as well as the 2011 ECHO Songwriting Prize winner Katie Moore. The Stampeders won this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award for a career which spans more the forty years and in which they created more than a dozen Top 10 hit songs and they won four Juno Awards.

About SOCAN

As authorized by the Copyright Act of Canada, SOCAN (The Society of Composers Authors and
Music Publishers of Canada) is the Canadian copyright collective for the communication and performance of musical works.  It was created in 1990 with the merger of Canada’s two previous performing rights organizations; namely, The Composers, Authors and Publishers Association of Canada and The Performing Rights Organization of Canada.  It administers these rights on behalf of its members (composers, lyricists, songwriters and their publishers) and those of affiliated international organizations by licensing the use of their music in Canada.  The fees collected by SOCAN are distributed as royalties to its members and to affiliated organizations throughout the world.  It also distributes royalties received from those organizations to its members for the use of their music worldwide. SOCAN has offices in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Edmonton and Dartmouth.  SOCAN works diligently with its members to ensure they are properly compensated when their music is broadcasted or performed in public. Over 100,000 members strong, in 2009 alone the organization collected more than $249 million in domestic license fees and royalties from international organizations.

The SOCAN Awards were truly an inspiration to all those in the music industry.  Check back here for next year’s SOCAN Awards!
