Eat to the Beat- 17 Years of Serving up Delights for Breast Cancer Awareness

On Tuesday October 16, 2012, sixty of Canada’s top female culinary talent donated their resources—-time, talent, food, and support—-to the annual Eat to the Beat fundraiser. In its seventeenth year, this food-laden affair raised over $3.2 million for Willow Breast Cancer Support Canada, a non-profit organization that provides a variety of free support and services to those affected by breast cancer. Since its inception, over 80% of the proceeds go directly to Willow and their programs.

In the main foyer of the Roy Thomson Hall, over four hundred guests in attendance were in awe of the sight of sixty different sweet and savory food stations. Chefs that were present included Donna Dooher of Mildred’s Temple Kitchen in Liberty Village, Scarlett Gaffney from The Westin Hotel, and Chef Véronique Perez from Crêpes à GoGo.

Highlights of the evening included live music from Bellosound, which was a DJ accompanied by a live saxophonist as well as beautiful models in food-themed corsets that were a feast for the eyes. These gorgeous models, some of whom were breast cancer survivors, handed out raffle tickets and brought the sass to the evening. There was also a silent auction with amazing prizes such as kitchenware, hair styling tools, tickets to an upcoming Raptors game, and a six-bottle crate of VQA wines from the Peller Estates winery.

Of course, the real highlight was the endless selection of food and drinks presented to the guests. The alcohol for the night was generously provided by Colio Estates, Victoria Gin, Tipicular Fixins’, Chateau des Charmes, and Steamwhistle Brewery, just to name a few. One Coconut Water, Coca-cola, and Tealish teas provided the non-alcoholic beverages. In every corner of the foyer, there was a martini bar, Eska water bar, tea station, and a stand that made gin-infused pink lemonade snowballs.

As for the food, they were gastronomically out of this world! The GE Monogram People’s Choice Award winner was the wild mushroom soup with truffle oil prepared by Elyse Glaser of Nella Cucina. Other culinary favourites included the Mayan spiced braised beef short rib with plaintain mash and a plaintain chip garnish, prepared by Anne Yarymowich from the AGO. The Kafta Meatballs in Tagine Sauce from the Sultan’s Tent restaurant also proved to be a popular dish amongst the guests. As for the sweet dishes, guests could not get enough of the nicely spiced Dulce de Leche macaroons from Wanda’s Pie in the Sky bakeshop and the delicate Black Forest macarons from Sweet Escape Patisserie. After a few thank you speeches from Jeff Beach, Executive Director of Willow, and Virgina Yule, Chair of Eat to the Beat and breast cancer survivor, the guests began to leave with full stomachs and adorable parting gifts of chocolates and candles.

The Eat to the Beat fundraiser was an absolute success! It was an evening of libation and inspiration for one great cause. The cuisine was plentiful, the company enjoyable, and there was no shortage of support that many people have for the Willow organization. If the guests had taken one lesson from the evening, it would be that there would always be support for anyone affected by breast cancer. This sold out event proves that no one needs to face breast cancer alone.
