About Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Canada
According to FSP, ,
"FSC is an international certification and labeling system that guarantees that the forest products you purchase come from responsibly managed forests and verified recycled sources. Under FSC certification, forests are certified against a set of strict environmental and social standards, and fibre from certified forests is tracked all the way to the consumer through the chain of custody certification system. The end result is products in the marketplace carrying the FSC 'check-tree' logo.
FSC certification is a voluntary and market-based mechanism for ensuring that our forests are healthy. Consumer demand for FSC-certified products encourages forest managers and owners to become FSC-certified. Independent third-party auditors conduct all FSC certification audits." [www.fsccanada.org]
The Gala Dinner
The Gala Dinner was held at the Hertiage Court on the C.N.E. grounds in Toronto, Canada on September 28, 2007. It was preceded by a fine reception that had fine wine and other drinks as well as elegantly served food. The delicious dinner consisted of wild Canadian Salmon Filet on a bed of mixed greens as an appetizer, both fine beef and chicken, and an exxcellent dessert! There was present at this event a wide mixture of representatives from the forest industry as well as from the environmental area which allowed for well rounded discussions!
The Awards
The 2007 FSC Winds of Change Award was presented to Mr. James Lopez, President and C.E.O. of Tembec Enterprises Inc. at the Gala for its "2001 commitment to seek FSC certification of all their forest management and forestry operations. To date, Tembec has certified over 90% of their forestlands to FSC's standards and played a pivotal role in the transformation of the market for FSC-certified wood products."
FSC Canada, for the first time, presented an individual Winds of Change Award to Mr. Jeff Amos for his "volunteer contribution to the future of forestry in the Maritimes in fulfilling the arduous task of chairing the multi-stakeholder FSC Working Group that carried out initial revisions to the FSC Maritimes Standard, followed by a comprehensive five-year review."
