27th Annual Genie Awards 2007
The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television held the 27th Annual Genie Awards, celebrating excellence in Canadian cinema, on February 13, 2007 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada at the Carlu. They were hosted by Lisa Ray and Terry David Mulligan. According to its web site, "The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television is a national non-profit professional association designed to promote, recognize and celebrate exceptional achievements in the Canadian film and television industries."
After the Awards ceremony, CHUM aired a one-hour special live from the historic Carlu showcasing highlights of the Awards ceremony, interviews with winners and nominees and clips from the nominated films - i.e. the night's memorable moments.
This year there was a buzz surrounding the Genies due to the financial success of three Canadian films in the Canadian market: Bon Cop, Bad Cop , Trailer Park Boys: The Movie and The Rocket. This commercial success especially in the English Canadian market meet a prime new objective of the Canadian government funding agencies. The 27th annual Genies were awarded during challenging times as ACTRA, the union representing Canadian performers, remains locked in a dispute with producers about fair compensation for use of actors' work on the Internet and new rates.
The Canadian film Bon Cop, Bad Cop ( about a pair of cops who bicker in both official languages in their hunt for a homicidal hockey fan ) took the best picture prize at the Awards that was otherwise dominated by the Rocket ( a film about hockey legend Maurice Richard ) which took home nine Genies, including best actor for Roy Dupuis, best actress for Julie Le Breton and best supporting actor for Stephen McHattie. Oddly, Trailer Park Boys: The Movie, was shut out of the Genies despite being listed on many year-end critics' Top 10 lists and scoring the biggest opening weekend in Canadian box office history.
