The Miss Chinese Toronto Pageant is a unique cultural event. It was renamed in 1999 to the Miss Chinese Toronto Pageant and is an annual beauty pageant organized by Fairchild Television that selects Toronto's representative for the annual Miss Chinese International Pageant that is held in Hong Kong.

TorontoArtsandEvents got caught up in the excitement and the ceremonty of this beauty and talent pageant. As this pageant was so unusual, it is crucial to set the stage for how it unraveled over the three hour live Fairchild TV broadcast. Consider the 10 lovely contestants: For starters, the contestants must be Chinese and speak Chinese and they must be able to act and speak on camera, walk properly without tipping over, perform some special ability, and look good in a swimsuit and be talented. All the contestants were tiny and doll-like in physical quality.

The whole pageant was almost totally in the Chinese language and follows a curious theme. Luckily a translator was by my side or I would have been very bewildered indeed. When the pageant opened with its first of many musical numbers, I thought I was looking at the Sherwood Forest of so many tales. I was informed by my cultural guides, that Chinese shows often follow a fantastical theme and often borrow themes and songs from popular stories, Hong Kong TV dramas and pop music.

The contentests were selected at an audition and were judged based on the gowns, and bath suit and each contestant must perform a talent. TorontoArtsandEvents noted that all of the attendents were proceeding throught towards obtaining their university degrees.

At the swimsuit and poise segment of the pageant, the contestants came one at a time to the front of the stage to demonstrate their ability to walk and pose like models. Once at the front of stage they were asked situational questions by the MC. Nail biting stuff! The contestants were asked unusual questions to test their personalities. But it was all part of the fantastical and bemusing theme of the show and everyone appeared to just love it.

Nearing the last few moments of the show you could feel the energy in the audience, comprised of mainly family, friends and pageant supports, getting more and more emotional and animated. To sooth the audience, there was a bit more singing from Hong Kong celebrity Bosco Wong, whilst the judges tabulate their final scores. There would be winners for: Talent, Best in Swim Suit, Vitality, Friendship, Charming Communication, and Most Photogenic before the Official Pageant Winner was announced with her 1st and 2nd runners up.

For this year's Toronto Miss Chinese Pageant, the winner was the favorite to win, Miss number four or as better known to family and friends, Christine Kuo. The other winners of the night were: 10 Louise Wang - First Runner-Up; 3 Juliana Jaw - Second Runner-Up; 4 Christine Kuo - Miss Photogenic; 6 Christine Kuo - Fittest Posture; 4 Christine Kuo - Miss Popularity; 1 Monica Lee - Miss Friendship; 4 Christine Kuo - Beautiful Hair and 10 Louise Wang - Most Talented. Once the winners were announced, given their flowers and banners, pandemonium broke out in the convention centre auditorium. There was a mad rush to the stage by press and supporters with such a huge outpouring of excitement. It really was something unique to see in Toronto!

Best wishes to all the girls in the pageant from Toronto Arts and Events and our congratulations to all the winners of this year's event! Check back hear for next year's pageant.
