Canadian Music Week 2009
"Simmons vs. Lefsetz"
the Economy & the Internet
The 2009 Canadian Music Week was held March 11 to 14, 2009 in Toronto, Ontario and attracted participants from across the globe. CMW is Canada's largest annual event dedicated to the celebration and promotion of the country's music, media and entertainment industries. It consisted of two conferences, a trade exposition and four awards events; namely; the Indies, the Crystal Awards, the Canadian Music Industry Gala Awards and the Canadian Radio Music Awards.
CMW's Music & Entertainment Convention has delegates from record companies, music manufacturers, radio and music television broadcasters, music retailers and distributors, new media/Internet producers, concert promoters, venue managers, music & video producers, and recording artists and musicians. It consists of two complete conference events; namely, the
Executive Conference which targets music & media business professionals and the Tuneup Conference. The CMW Executive Conference is the official meeting ground for those who truly shape the music & broadcast industries and attracts more than 2000 executives from the industry - CMW claims that over 70% of the attendees are VP/Director or higher. The TuneUp Conference, which runs concurrently with the Executive Conference, is designed to assist new and experienced artists hone their skills in all aspects of their careers.
The Conference this year focused on the economy and on the dramatic effect that the Internet has had and will have on the music industry and how best to cope with these changes. In an interesting session,Simmons vs. Lefsetz held a CAGE MATCH debate on Friday, March 13th at 4:00 p.m.. The "debate" begain with Simmons cutting Lefstez's hair and last name; however, the yell fest finally centred on whether or not Mr. Simmons matched with Universial Canada could help young Canada bands be successful and whether or not these bands should give up all of the rights including rights to concerts. With sales the way they are, many Managers are advising bands not to give up this right. Simmons, for his part, argued that he could fix the prospective bands with merchandise promotions tours, with television appearance etc. Mr. Lefstez felt this was to much like the 70's. Some PR professionals we spoke to felt it was all hype? Your thoughts?
The highlight of the Canadian Music Week are the awards:
