2006 Giller Prize

The twelfth annual dinner and award ceremony of the Giller Prize, Canada's Premier literary prize for fiction was held on November 7, 2006 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Toronto, Ontario and drew about 450 members of the publishing, media and arts communities such as Justin Trudeau, Adrienne Clarkson, Margaret Atwood, Wendy Crewson, Eric Peterson, Janet Wright, Bob Rae among many others. Jack Rabinovitch, ( President of Nodel Investments Ltd., a real estate/venture capital firm ) founded the Giller Prize in 1994 in honour of his late wife, literary journalist Doris Giller, who had passed away from cancer the year before. The award which had endowed a annual cash prize of $ 25,000 was raised by Scotiabank in 2005 to $50,000 with $40,000 going to the winner, and $2,500 being given to each of the other four finalists. The Giller Prize recognizes excellence in Canadian fiction and is said to be the largest annual prize for fiction in Canada.

The jury panel was composed of the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson, and distinguished Canadian authors Alice Munro and Michael Winter who chose the finalists from eligible books from across Canada.

The five finalists authors and their books for the 2006 Giller Prize were:

  • Rawi Hage for his novel De Niro's Game, published by House of Anansi Press
  • Vincent Lam for his short story collection, Bloodletting & Miraculous Cures, published by Doubleday Canada
  • Pascale Quiviger for her novel The Perfect Circle, translation by Sheila Fischman, Published by Cormorant Books
  • Gaetan Soucy for his novel The Immaculate Conception, translation by Lazer Lederhendler, published by House of Anansi Press
  • Carol Windley for her short story collection, Home Schooling, published by Cormorant Books

The winner is:
Vincent Lam for his short story collection, Bloodletting & Miraculous Cures, published by Doubleday Canada. Toronto's Shaftesbury Films has advised that Bloodletting will be made into a TV series for the Movie Network!
